STUDIO

For me, nothing is more rewarding than catching and interpreting someone else’s vision for their song, and helping them achieve that goal quickly and creatively. I also want my local music scene to thrive, so any chance I get to be even a small part of a project is fulfilling. I have enjoyed building this space for artists and producers to create and collaborate. I cut my teeth recording myself and friends on tape machines, so I know what it’s like to be the one behind the mic, digging for THE TAKE.

At Hear Hear Studios, we either work analog and track to tape, as well as on the computer. The hybrid workflow of the studio also allows remote engineers or self-producing bands to feel at ease and explore the benefits of both worlds if desired. I really love making bold art! If you are interested in working with me or seeking a place to call home for your next record, please fill out the contact form below.

Hear Hear is also a community of artists that enjoy collaboration on projects from preproduction and songwriting to making music for sync and visual creators.

What To Expect

I’m here to ensure you have a great tracking experience, whether this is your first time recording or you’re a seasoned pro.

We’ll start by setting up based on our previous consultation, getting everything ready to capture amazing sounds when you arrive. The focus is on productive tracking throughout the day. At the end, I can provide reference mixes, bounces, or rough mixes from the analog tape machine if needed. Please be mindful allotting time for this during your booked session period.

As an engineer and musician, I can either collaborate closely or stay in the background facilitating your creativity - whatever works best for you. I’m also happy to walk you through the recording process so you can focus on making your art without any distractions. Either way, I come prepared by studying your references and demos in advance.

Our aim is a smooth and comfortable session tailored to your needs.

FAQ

Tracking To Tape

What are the benefits of tracking to tape?

Tape is a linear format and is a great fit for bands who are confident in their arrangement and want to explore the challenge and gratification of putting down a thoughtful performance. Some bands may want to only track basics like drums and bass to tape, leaving overdubs for the computer. Every project is different - I don’t place rules, but I am big on commitment to takes and performances. Stay raw, stay true to yourselves - that will shine through.

How much does tape cost?

For my 16 track tape machine, tape costs $200 for approximately 30 minutes of recording time. I split the tape cost with any band wanting to track to tape since it’s my preferred workflow.

What should I expect when tracking to tape?

Know your song arrangements well and be able to commit to sounds/performances. Feel the satisfaction of hard work paying off, and give a middle finger to Spotify! We can collaborate, or you can bring your vision and I’ll track it - just communicate clearly.

MIXING

What are your mixing rates?

My mixing rate is $350 per song. This includes your final mix ready for mastering, with revisions made until the mix is right. Additional deliverables like stems/alternates are $50/hr.

What services are included/excluded in the mixing rate?

The mixing rate includes getting you a finished mix ready for mastering  based on our production goals discussion. Services like vocal tuning, time alignment, arranging are not included but can be quoted separately or outsourced.

What is the mixing process like?

Once stems are received, I'll prep the session and mix according to our discussed goals. Revisions are part of the process - clear communication helps me efficiently get your mix where you want. Detailed production notes are very helpful! After the final mix, I can navigate sending it to a mastering engineer or provide you the mastering-ready files.

Why don't you offer mastering services?

As someone focused on tracking and mixing, I can't devote the specialized mental focus that a dedicated mastering engineer can provide. For your music to get the best possible mastering, I prefer outsourcing to an objective "last ear" who does mastering as their career focus.

How do you select a mastering engineer?

I strive to find a mastering engineer who has worked on music aligning with your project's goals and sonic qualities. Mastering engineers tend to be very friendly and accessible!

How does the remote mixing process work?

For remote mixing, after receiving payment, I will send you the first mix revision via WeTransfer or Google Drive. We'll go through revisions until you're satisfied with the final mix. Once the mixing is complete, I will provide you with the stems at your preferred sample rate, ready to send off for mastering. Likewise I am happy to handle communication and sending files to the mastering engineer on the artists behalf.

What are the payment/booking details?

An initial $100 deposit per booked day is required. Rescheduling must be requested 2 weeks prior, otherwise the full day rate is charged for cancellations inside 2 weeks. I try to reschedule when possible.

Will I need to bring my own instruments?

You're always welcome to bring your own instruments that are part of your signature sound as well as any computers that have beats or ideas on them.

However, Hear Hear studio is equipped with a range of instruments, including guitars, synthesizers, drum sets, and more. Our gear is here to be utilized by you!  For a comprehensive list of the instruments and equipment available at our studio, please refer to our gear list.
